TOOTHBRUSH clubs are to be set up in Barnsley schools in an effort to tackle tooth decay, after it was revealed more than 600 children are admitted to hospital across the borough for the removal of decayed teeth every year.

The figure equates to 1.1 per cent of all children in Barnsley and was revealed in the council’s public health strategy for the next three years.

Dentist Dr Elisabeth Baltescu, of mydentist on Peel Street, said: “Barnsley has a higher risk of cavities for both children and adults. It is a problem in this area.”

Dr Baltescu said mydentist had started visiting schools with a mobile dental bus to try and explain the importance to children of brushing their teeth, and brushing them properly.
