SILKSTONE Common’s new open space, Jays Wood, is on course for an official spring opening following work by the CARE environmental group.
The woodland, off Hall Royd Lane, was acquired by Silkstone Parish Council after being out of bounds to the public for many years.
A grant has allowed the CARE group to open up an entrance, with stone pillars and a section of stone pathway, as well as installing a seat close the centre of the woodland, which was once part of a small colliery site.
The wood is on a circular walk which takes in interesting and historic elements of the two villages and provides a stopping off point for walkers to rest and enjoy the natural environment.
