PLANS to restore the Pickering Cup have received the backing of the family which gave the trophy its name - almost 20 years after it reappeared for the first time.

The lost football trophy, established in 1933, was unearthed in 2007 when a distant relative of the Pickering family gave it to youth football manager Ian Shillito in the hopes of it being used once again to restart the historic competition.

Ian looked after it for a time before passing it onto the Rose and Crown pub, in Darton. When the pub was renovated two years ago, the cup made its way back into Ian Shillito’s hands.

The cup is currently in the hands of Barnsley Archives staff, who will keep it safe.
