Sam Winnall scored an 88th-minute winner as Barnsley made it six consecutive League One victories at Swindon Town on Saturday.

The striker got his 16th of the season and his ninth in six league games, a run that has already attracted interest from other clubs with Leeds United allegedly having a bid rejected on Friday and other approaches expected before Monday's transfer deadline.

The Reds moved up a place to 12th in League One and are five points off the play-offs, 11 clear of the relegation zone.

After Barnsley had the better of the first half, the hosts were on top after the break but Barnsley, who had more chances overall, always looked dangerous on the counter-attack and got the late win.

Head coach kept the same team from the 1-0 win at Bradford City four days earlier after Alfie Mawson overcame a groin problem to start.

After a very dull first 15 minutes, the Reds twice came close to scoring within seconds. Marley Watkins had a close range shot blocked by the goalkeeper's legs after a fine run by Lloyd Isgrove then Winnall headed over Conor Hourihane's cross from well inside the box.

Midway through the half, Reds goalkeeper Adam Davies raced off his line to tackle Nicky Ajose on the edge of his box after a flowing Swindon move cut through the Reds. Yaser Kasim then tried to chip the ball into the empty goal but hit the roof of the net.

Mawson fired over from 25 yards after a mazy run past several players then Hourihane and Josh Brownhill both placed free-kicks above the crossbar from a similar distance.

Hourihane then missed a golden chance in first half injury-time when he was put clean through on the left of the box following another good counter-attack but shot too close to Vigouroux who again saved with his legs.

Swindon began well in the second half and Davies had to throw himself to right to turn Jon Obika's 20-yard effort around his right post.

Winnall was denied by an excellent Nathan Thompson tackle while substitute Josh Scowen's first touch was a header over from a George Williams cross.

Michael Smith, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Barnsley from the Robins, came off the bench for Swindon.

But it was Barnsley's star striker Winnall who got the late winner when he turned in Scowen's low cross from the right.
