Caretaker boss Paul Heckingbottom says a play-off push is still not out of the question.

Barnsley suffered their first loss of 2016 at Gillingham on Saturday and are now eight points off sixth spot.        The Royston man says his side are capable of going on another winning run and believes the players will continue to perform with a Wembley date on the horizon and the potential for a new head coach to come in.

He said: "You've got to have targets and goals and you're striving to win every game so that's what you're chasing without a doubt. But also you've got to give it some perspective and there's another ten teams speaking about the play-offs.

"We're second favourites, if you like, so we will have to go on some sort of run again and be consistent to get anywhere near. But we're trying to.

"The players are trying to impress because they're playing for places in the Wembley final and they're a good group of lads anyway. You've got to go out and win every single game.  We want to reward the fans for coming down and watching."

Wins over Doncaster Rovers and Bury would strengthen Barnsley's play-off push and the case for Heckingbottom getting the head coach job full-time.

Chief executive Ben Mansford said last week that Heckingbottom would be given at least several weeks in the role and that there were no plans to interview other candidates.

The caretaker said: "The next two games are crucial but every one is. "It's not about me getting the job, it's about us getting the points. It's about impressing whoever the new manager may be and rewarding the fans.

"It might affect my role definitely but in terms of the players and the football club we want to win every game anyway. The players aren't going to approach it any differently because I say winning this game will get me the job.

"Nothing's changed officially but we're settling into the role and the players are settling down after a mad few days. I know that the club have made statements and have said that, in the short-term, they're happy with how things are going. That's all we know.

"There's nothing more to say on that until the club is willing to make a decision and then make it official. We're just carrying on. The players can't guarantee the result but they can guarantee their application and how they go about it on the pitch."

Heckingbottom says that there are no plans to bring in loan players but says they will be able to act swiftly if that changes. He added: "There are no immediate plans to bring anyone in but there are plans in motion if we do need someone. We're in a position to just step forward and make it happen."
