HUNDREDS of Barnsley teenagers have been given a huge boost to their confidence, independence and social skills while having ‘the time of their lives’ through a project which is still one of Barnsley’s best kept secrets.

Every summer a growing number of 15, 16 and 17-year-olds are invited to take part in the National Citizen Service (NCS) which is run through Barnsley Football Club’s Reds in the Community.

This year it will be 285 kids who will spend one week doing activities like abseiling, canoeing, raft building, rock climbing and gorge scrambling, either in the Lake District or the Peak District.

They’ll spend a second week as part of a team learning how to fend for themselves living in a university hall of residence with a £20 budget to live on.
