ROYSTON’S Adam Byrom has been called up to the England under 17 angling team for next month’s Junior World Cup in the Czech Republic. The 15-year-old fishes for Barnsley Juniors and this will be his second world cup for his country, having returned from last year’s event in Portugal with a team bronze medal. Byrom, who is completing his exams at Royston High School, secured his place in the squad at Sunday’s trials match at Thurston Lake in Milton Keynes. He said: “The match was all pole fishing on bloodworm and we fished two, three-hour sessions. I caught 1.6 kilos in the first session and 2 kilos in the second. “That put me third after each session and the team manager announced four people who had made the squad straight after the final session. I was delighted to get picked.” Meanwhile, Redfearn AC held their third match of the season on Saturday at Moorfield’s, fishing the match lake but it was a match with a difference as all the anglers fished in fancy dress. Tony Wroe wasted no time in getting straight into the fish. However, it was not long before all anglers began catching and Pete Lee put a very good weight together towards the end fishing down the edge. James Lee was also catching well but it was Pete Lee who held on to top spot with 83lbs of carp. Wroe was second with 57lbs of carp fishing the pole at 13m and James Lee was third with 37lb 10oz. Jeff Hodgson was fourth with 36lb 4oz. There were section wins for Mark Mellor (34lb 6oz) and Alan Wheatcroft (26lb 8oz). The next match will be Saturday, June 23 at Lodge Farm, fishing the Signal pond. The bream failed to show for Lundwood Angling Club as they held their latest match at Smithies Reservoir. The winner was Gary Hallhouse with a catch of 10lb 12 3/4oz from peg four, fishing pole with a maggot hookbait. Second was Steve Newton with 8lb 9.5oz from peg 20, fishing the feeder and alternating hookbaits. Chris Trimnell was third with 6lb 13 3/4oz from peg 12, fishing the feeder with maggot hookbait. Section winners were Dave Batley jnr 6lb 4.5oz from peg five, fishing pole and maggot and catching small fish and Mick Caulfield, who weighed in at 5lb 5 1/4oz from peg 19. Mick was fishing pole and alternating between maggot and pellet hookbait.
