Barnsley moved a point closer to the play-off places as they drew 0-0 at second-placed Burton Albion and sixth-placed Gillingham lost at home to Port Vale.
The Reds are now two points behind Gillingham with four league games remaining after a goalless stalemate at Burton in which both sides had just a couple of shots on goal.
One big negative is that forward Marley Watkins is expected to be out for the season with a jaw injury picked up earlier in the week. He was replaced by Lloyd Isgrove. Aidy White and James Bree were also out injured so Josh Scowen and George Williams came into the side and played at right-back and left-back respectively.
Barnsley started on top and created the better chances early on but could not keep their efforts down. Adam Hammill curled a free-kick just over then Ivan Toney also blazed high with both a volley from the edge of the box and an overhead kick from closer in. Sam Winnall put a great chance over the top on the volley from six yards out after reaching Hammill's left-wing cross.
Hammill eventually forced the first save by either goalkeeper when he shot straight at Burton's Jon McLaughlin from 20 yards out with 15 second left in the first half. The Reds had been the better side but went into the interval goalless.
Barnsley continued to edge the game early in the second half with Winnall heading wide a cross by Hammill who then curled just off target from 25 yards.
Burton came back into the match and had their first real chance of the game on 63 minutes when Calum Butcher shot just wide of the left post from the edge of the box. Adam Davies was then forced into his first save when he showed good reactions to turn Mark Duffy's close range shot from a tight angle around his right post with his left hand.
Davies denied Duffy again with a curling shot from further out then Winnall almost won it in the last minute but sent an overhead kick over the bar from a Marc Roberts throw.
