WHEN is a pothole not a pothole? That’s the question a Barnburgh motorist is asking after Barnsley Council has refused to pay for damage to his car when he hit a deep hole in the road.
Brian Hair of Scot Lane, Harlington hit a pothole in Furlong Road between his home and Adwick-on-Dearne on Sunday February 18. When he returned to his vehicle after lunch he found the tyre which hit the pothole was flat.
He had only just bought the car and returned it to the garage where they found damage to the inner flange which was allowing air to escape and it cost him £178 for a new alloy wheel. He took photographs of the pothole and submitted a claim for compensation to Barnsley Council.
“The council is denying responsibility,” said Mr Hair.
“I’ve tried ringing them countless times, but no matter what time of day I ring I’m told that the man is in a meeting. I cannot get any further and don’t know what to do next.”
