DAMAGE to the steps at Barnsley Pals Centenary Square believed to have been caused by skateboarders will hopefully be repaired in time for the Battle of the Somme Centenary commemorations.
Wombwell-based photographer Shaun Colborn highlighted the damage when he was making his preparations for photographing the ceremony due to be held on July 1 - the anniversary of the first day of the First World War’s bloodiest battle.
A council spokesman said: “We share the disappointment at the damage to the town hall steps, but would point out much of this was first seen around the time of the Barnsley Pals Centenary Square opening in September 2013.
“On this occasion, we will be carrying out minor repairs to the steps and hope that this will be done before Friday July 1, in time for the ceremony to commemorate the Battle of the Somme. However, this does depends on the availability of the specialist contractors that are required to carry out these kind of repairs.”
