WENTWORTH Castle has been named Restoration Project of the Year in the Yorkshire Renaissance awards scheme.

The estate was shortlisted alongside projects in Leeds, York and Skipton.

Wentworth Trust director Richard Evans said: “It was a surprise, especially as we have only been open to visitors since May.

“It is fantastic to receive such recognition of what is being achieved at Wentworth Castle and we hope it will help spread the word about the restored gardens and park.”

Visitor numbers have been 50 per cent higher than expected.
