NUISANCE complaints made to the council have rocketed, the Chronicle has learned.

A Freedom of Information request to Barnsley Council shows there were 2,433 complaints to its environmental health service in 2015/16, a significant 27 per cent increase on the 1,918 recorded in 2014/15.

The largest rise was in reports about accumulation of waste - up 113 per cent - followed by an increase in odour complaints (52 per cent) and light (21 per cent). The largest volume of complaints (1341) was for noise - up by 17 per cent on the previous year and smoke (318), also up 17 per cent on 2014/15.
