Barnsley's two wins this week may make it easier for them to land their top targets in the final 12 days of the transfer window, says Paul Heckingbottom.

But the fantastic home victories over Derby County and Queens Park Rangers this week have not dampened the head coach's desire to bring in several new players to add strength in depth.

"It's possible that our results will have made us a better prospect for players to come to," Heckingbottom told the Chronicle.

"You want the best possible side and you don't want to settle for anything.  We ask the players to get better all the time and we have to do that as a club with our recruitment as well.  We will be looking for the best possible players to come in and make an impact.

"We need new players – a couple, at least. It's impossible for all our current players to play every game.    We have asked a lot of them and they give absolutely everything. There will be injuries and dips in form and fitness.

"We will need to freshen the team up and give players a rest so we need extra players to do that. We need to have back-up in every area or we will be left short."

Once the summer transfer window closes at the end of August, clubs will not be allowed to bring in emergency loans as in previous seasons so they will keep the same squad until January unless they bring in unattached free agents.

Heckingbottom said: "It's a numbers thing because of a change in the loan rules. But we have a great bunch of players who are performing at a good level, so anyone we bring in now needs to be at that level or we need to get them up to that level. We have to pick the right player who will add something to our squad.  That's the bit which takes all the time. I am watching videos and taking phonecalls about players all the time.

"It will roll on until the last few hours of the window, which is strange and maddening but that's the way it is. There might be a domino effect from the top down to the bottom – one moves and it triggers everything. It would be good if it was as simple as: 'we want him, let's get it done.' But it also depends on the club whose player he is and what they are doing. It's like selling a house. The chain all the way down can become ridiculous.  I am expecting it to be like that for us."

Heckingbottom admits Barnsley are most light in defensive areas and is targeting a left-back, with Aidy White currently the only senior player in that position. The Reds boss said: "It's something we have been aware of for a long time.  We know what Aidy can do but we're leaving ourselves short in that position. It's something we're looking at. There's no panic."
