A BARNSLEY woman has spoken of her amazement after a total stranger volunteered to have one of their kidneys removed to save her life.

Karen Kanee is one of only about 500 people in the UK to ever receive a donated kidney from an altruistic donor - a living stranger who volunteers to have one of their kidneys removed to help someone on the waiting list.

The process only became legal ten years ago and in that time 509 donors have come forward. Before that the only live kidney transplants were between close relatives and friends.

“I think it’s just amazing that a stranger would just volunteer to donate a kidney to a random person and put themselves at risk like that,” said Karen, 43, of Wentworth Crescent, Mapplewell.
