A DEVELOPMENT of 80 homes in Honeywell will go ahead without any affordable homes on the estate - under a deal brokered between the council and Barnsley College which owned the land involved.

The college sold the site to help finance the new Shambles Street sixth form building in the town centre and councillors who approved final details of how the site will be developed were told by Joe Jenkinson, head of planning at Barnsley Council that affordable housing was not viable for the site, at Carrington Avenue, Honeywell.

"The landower is Barnsley College. If we had taken the money off them for affordable housing, they would not have been able to afford the sixth form, which I think we all agree is a tremendous asset."
