A PUB company has offered an assurance about the future of the Beggar and Gentleman in Hoyland following its surprise closure after little more than three months with a new tenant.
Landlady Lesley Hicks-Smith moved in with her husband Perry in the summer after the Market Street building had been standing vacant for several months.
She had reported a positive response from customers and had the business objective of re-creating the pub as a ‘community hub’ providing services for all sections of the population, rather than just adult drinkers.
One of her most recent plans had been to turn the car park into a winter attraction that would benefit the whole centre of Hoyland around the festive season.
Lesley had a longstanding connection with the business, having worked there in the past and knew the pub as a previous local for family members.
The couple could not be contacted, but the building has been secured with metal shutters and the only signs outside are to warn thieves there is nothing of value on the premises.
Enterprise Inns own the pub say a new tenant is due to move into the pub next month.
