A CROSS for every man and boy who perished in the Oaks Disaster 150 years ago will be placed in the shadow of the Barnsley Main headgear.
The poignant gesture - alongside the lighting of a beacon in the pityard - is the brainchild of the Barnsley Main Heritage Group to mark the anniversary of the mining disaster at Oaks Colliery, the worst in English history.
There will be several events taking place on the weekend leading up to the December 12 anniversary and the heritage group is holding its own memorial on Sunday, December 11 at Barnsley Main, which eventually took over the workings of the Oaks Colliery.
