A PARISH councillor has hit out at the ‘disrespect’ shown by flytippers using a miners’ memorial as a illegal dumping ground for unwanted waste.

The Houghton Main Miners’ Memorial, a pit winding wheel, was put in place in 1995 on Middlecliffe Lane.

Standing in pride of place at the centre of the bus turnaround, a plaque is inscribed with the words: “This winding wheel was erected as a memorial to all men and boys who were killed at Houghton Main Colliery. Also, to all miners and their families who suffered hardship and grief in their pursuit of coal.”

But just yards away, everything from industrial waste, empty cans of vegetable oil, sofas and even the remains of cannabis plants have been discovered.
