MORE than £2m could be spent on building ‘downsizer’ housing for the elderly.

Barnsley Council is looking at investing one-off savings made in its housing budget to develop a new build scheme that would increase accommodation for the elderly - which was identified as a priority in its older persons and vulnerable adults assessment review published last summer.

The money £2.4m has come from a surplus in the council’s housing revenue account, which handles all spending and income relating to council housing and related services.

Senior councillor Alan Gardiner said the new scheme is likely to target the issue of downsizing as outlined in the review, which recommended thousands more specialist homes will have to be built in Barnsley to meet future needs of the vulnerable and elderly over the next 15 years.
