Barnsley earned a famous 3-1 win at Aston Villa on Tuesday to stay in touch with the Championship play-off places.

The visitors surged into a 2-0 lead through Adam Armstrong's penalty and Tom Bradshaw's fine finish but the hosts pulled one back just before the break. Bradshaw's second early in the second half secured the win against a side that included former Reds captain Conor Hourihane who left in January.

Barnsley have moved up to ninth and remain six points off the play-off places after an eighth away win of the season.

Paul Heckingbottom made made four changes to the side that drew 0-0 at Reading three days earlier.Callum Elder, George Moncur, Ryan Kent and Adam Armstrong came into the side for Gethin Jones, the injured Josh Scowen, Adam Hammill and Ryan Williams.

Despite Kent having the opening shot at the match which was easily held by Villa goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, the hosts were on top for the opening quarter. Jonathan Kodjia sent an overhead kick over the bar and and Henri Lansbury was twice denied from long range by Adam Davies who also tipped over Albert Adomah's 20-yard powerful effort.

But it was the Reds who took the lead against the run of play when Villa's left-back Jordan Amavi was judged to have tripped Marley Watkins in the box. Armstrong smashed in the spot-kick in the 25th minute.Matty James then saw a free-kick tipped over by Johnstone as Barnsley took plenty of confidence from their opener.

Bradshaw doubled the lead in the 43rd minute with a lovely finish into the bottom left corner after a right-wing cross from right-back Andy Yiadom. But the hosts pulled one back a minute later when Kodjia turned in Adomah's cross.

Bradshaw got his second just before the hour when he smashed a low finish into the bottom left corner from 12 yards after Marc Roberts' cross was blocked following a scramble in the home box.

Roberts lost the ball on the edge of his own box but former Barnsley trialist Scott Hogan's goal was ruled out for offside. Adomah and Kodjia then both fired over as the Reds held on for a famous win.
