MORE than 95 per cent of Barnsley’s youngsters were told they have won their first choice of secondary school place this week.

There were 2,487 applications for secondary schools - a rise of 3.9 per cent since last year - to start school in September.

The year six pupils could apply for up to three secondary schools in order of preference.

Of those, 2,368 (95.2 per cent) were offered their first choice, 80 (3.2 per cent) got their second choice and just ten (0.4 per cent) were offered their third choice.

That left 29 pupils (1.2 per cent) who were unsuccessful in getting any of their chosen places and will have a school assigned to them by education officials.

There were 65 late applications which will be processed later this month.
