A NEW housing development could be built on a field in Royston if plans are approved by Barnsley Council.

Applicant David Smith has submitted a scheme for 21 dwellings off Cross Lane, comprising of one two-bedroom, 14 three-bedroom and six four-bedroom dwellings, four of which have been designated for affordable housing.

However, a similar scheme for 14 dwellings was refused by Barnsley Council in 2013 on grounds that a housing scheme on the plot would be ‘materially detrimental’ to nearby residents.

A statement on behalf of Mr Smith said: “The site is currently a grassed field, previously used for grazing horses, and there are a number of mature trees on the site’s boundary.”
