IT MAY have been April 1, but organisers behind Penistone’s role in the Tour de Yorkshire proved they were no fools as the countdown to the event was officially launched.
The focal point of proceedings was to unveil a t-shirt banner for the tower of St John’s Church, with mountain rescue volunteers adding an element of drama by abseiling down the tower to put it in position.
Children from St John’s School also joined in the event, cycling from the school to take part in the celebrations.
Saturday marked Penistone’s official countdown to the tour, which will pass through the town on the way to the finishing line at Fox Valley, Stocksbridge, on April 30.
More events are planned over the next few weeks and surrounding villages are also planning their own celebrations to make the most of the high-profile race and the potential benefits it will bring.
