Barnsley are hoping to end a three-month run without a home win and send their fans away for the summer on a high tomorrow when they host Burton Albion in their last Oakwell game of the season.
The 14th-placed Reds have more points than in any season at this level since 1999/2000 and could set a club record of ten second tier away wins with victory at Newcastle in their last game on May 7.
But, if they fail to beat Burton, only the relegation season in 2013/14 will have seen the Reds win fewer home games since 1952/53. They currently have six.
Only bottom Championship two Rotherham United and Wigan Athletic have won fewer home matches this season, while the Millers are the only side to have conceded more goals on their own turf than Barnsley's 32. The Reds have not won in eight home matches since beating Leeds United 3-2 in January, more than three months ago.
"Our approach will be the same as for any game but the last home game does have a different feeling," said head coach Paul Heckingbottom, whose side have won just two of their last 16 matches.
"It would be good to send the players back out and let the fans thank them, and the players thank the fans, after a win. We want to end this run of home games without a win. But, until you are playing for four points at home and only three away, it makes no odds where you get the points. Burton are desperate for the point they need to stay up, but what we are playing for is to get a home win for our fans and finish the season well."
This match is the first 3pm Saturday kick-off at Oakwell since March 11 and it pits the club which has spent the most time in the second tier of English football against a side competing at this level for the first time. Burton, in their first Championship season following back-to-back promotions, need one more point for survival as they are six clear of the relegation zone in 18th place.
Nigel Clough's side – who are six points and four places below the Reds – have won their last two matches, away at fellow strugglers Birmingham City then at home to seventh-placed Leeds United. Burton, who went up alongside Barnsley last season, failed to win in any of their first 12 away games of the season but they have improved significantly on the road since Christmas, picking up 15 points and winning four out of ten.
The two clubs have only met four times in history, all in the last three seasons, while the Brewers are yet to beat the Reds or score past them. The first meeting was a 5-0 FA Cup Reds win at Oakwell in 2014 then Conor Hourihane netted a penalty in the 1-0 home league victory the following season. There is still yet to be a goal from open play in league games between the two sides as they played out two 0-0 draws in Staffordshire last year.
Former Barnsley striker Chris O'Grady is on a season-long loan at the Pirelli Stadium from Brighton but, after netting just once in 26 games, he has not played since February as he is one of seven loan players and the Brewers brought in several strikers in January.
