MOUNT Vernon Hospital will close ‘at some point’ and the site sold according to the trust which runs it.

It is the first real acknowledgement from South West Yorkshire NHS Partnership Trust (SWYFT) that the hospital is likely to close as a result of new ways of caring for people which will be introduced in July.

The response was prompted after the Chronicle received an anonymous email, which said staff had become ‘stressed and disheartened’ at being left in the dark about plans for the elderly people’s rehabilitation unit, and feared they could be made redundant or have to change contracts.

A spokesman for SWYFT said: “Healthcare partners in Barnsley are working together to develop a new way of providing intermediate care services. This will be managed through an alliance partnership from July. As a result of this, and other services relocating, it is likely that Mount Vernon will close at some point.
