HEDGEHOGS facing a prickly future are being offered a safe haven at Carlton Marsh nature reserve.

Pupils from Cherry Dale primary in Cudworth will be visiting the reserve on Thursday to deliver the homes for hedgehogs to hibernate or rear their young.

The move is an attempt to tackle the steady decline of the hedgehog population which has fallen from an estimated 36 million nationally in the 1950s to less than one million today.

The Hogwarts Hedgehog Hospital staff will be also be on hand to tell the school children more about how they can help to protect the animals.
