A MAN who has undergone several operations, including one to remove his gall bladder, to rectify stomach problems say he is still clueless about what is casuing them.
Benjamin Rapson, 24, of St Joseph's Gardens, Doncaster Road, suffers from stomach ulcers and polyps and says he has been in and out of hospital all his life due to the pain in his stomach which means he is unable to work.
His first operation was at the age of seven when part of his stomach removed, and he was back in for a similar procedure when he was just nine. But when he was 18, he became ill again and was again taken to hospital for tests. On one occasion, he says he was left 'nil-by-mouth' in hospital for five days and ended up discharging himself just so he could have something to eat.
Shortly afterwards he collapsed at work and he said he was told by staff at Barnsley Hospital that he was suffering from gall stones. In April 2015 he underwent an operation to remove his gall bladder, but afterwards doctors revealed it did not contain any stones.
Benjamin said the doctor then told him the problem was caused by inflammation from an ulcer. But after collapsing again at home, he underwent a further operation last October following a blockage in his bowel. He has now been left unable to work and says he feels suicidal due to his ongoing problem and lack of diagnosis.
He is taking medication for both his stomach and psychological problems but has never been given a diagnosis for his digestive issues and says he was told his problems were stress-related.
Benjamin said: "I feel very angry at the hospital. l I feel like they have messed my life up, I don't even want to be here.
"I suffer with pain in my stomach all the time. It means I can't do certain things. I can walk, but not very far until I have to sit down again.
A spokesman for Barnsley Hospital said: "We are very sorry to hear that Mr Rapson is unhappy with the care he has received. We are unable to comment on specific details of individual cases but we can confirm that our Patient Advice and Complaints Team is engaging with Mr Rapson to discuss and resolve his concerns."
