A PULLED ligament almost scuppered this diamond couple’s first date 65 years ago.

Geoff and Margaret Grimshaw, both 83, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary yesterday.

The couple, who live at Highstone Lane, Ward Green, arranged their first date in 1952, aged 17, after meeting at the Alhambra Cinema at the top of Wesley Street.

But when it came to the day, keen sportsman Geoff stood her up.

“I didn’t turn up,” he said. “I’d been playing football at lunchtime and pulled a ligament in my leg and my dad wouldn’t let me go so I sent a friend into town to meet her and he told her.

“I don’t think she believed him until I turned up the following Saturday walking up New Street on crutches. That’s when she realised I wasn’t lying. We started courting from then.”
