A CHURCH has stepped in to help save the town’s gay pride festival which faced being abandoned due to a lack of funds.

A cash crisis had threatened to derail plans for the revival of the town centre festival, which was last held in 2015 at Mandela Gardens.

Organisers have struggled to find the cash to cover costs, but their prayers have been answered by Hope House Church - based in a former night club building on Wellington Street.

It is allowing its car park to be used for a stage area to help bring costs down and means the street parade - to be held on Sunday, September 3 - can go ahead on Wortley Street, which is next to the church and will be closed for the day.
