Barnsley beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 to register their first Championship points of the season and avoid equalling a club record 11 home league games without victory. Matty Pearson scored an early opener for the hosts and they missed a series of fine chances to extend their lead before Forest levelled on 25 minutes. Ryan Hedges' superb strike just after the break and the hosts survived a long period of pressure to win. Paul Heckingbottom - whose side lost the first two games of the season - kept the same starting line-up and bench from Saturday's 2-1 home loss to Ipswich, as new striker signing Mamadou Thiam was not eligible. Barnsley took the lead in the fourth minute when George Moncur's left wing free-kick was headed goal wards by Pearson at the far post. Tom Bradshaw smashed it in but it was initially given as a Pearson goal, his first for the club. Bradshaw had two fine chances to double the lead in the first quarter of an hour when he was picked out unmarked in the box by superb Hammill crosses but firstly shot tamely at the goalkeeper then headed over. Another fine Hammill cross was headed into the ground by Ryan Hedges and cleared when he looked almost certain to score from six yards out. Home goalkeeper Adam Davies had been called upon to tip wide a low 20-yard Daryl Murphy effort in the he first ten minutes but it was totally against the run of play when the same player planted a fine header into the net from a Barrie McKay cross. McKay almost made it 2-1 to Forest a minute later but blazed high and wide from close range after meeting a right sided Ben Osborn cross at the back post. Osborne then missed when through on goal following a one-two with Murphy after Barnsley lost the ball in midfield. Forest were on top for the final 20 minutes of the first half but Barnsley almost went in ahead when Bradshaw had a shot from the edge of the box tipped over after a fine Moncur run and cushioned Hedges pass. The Reds scored within five minutes of the restart when Hedges fired a superb low shot into the bottom left corner from just outside the box. It was his third goal of the season. Forest responded with Osborne firing over from just outside the box then Andreas Bouchalakis shot straight at Davies from a similar distance.Davies then denied Murphy from point blank after Matt Mills headed on a corner. Forest produced a brilliant counter-attack with six minutes left but Mustapha Carayol put Kieran Dowell clean through and his tame shot just rolled to Davies. Carayol then set up another superb chance in the 90th minute when he outmuscled Hammill and crossed for Tendayi Darikwa whose low volley was touched wide by Davies.
