THERE was a massive turn out on Wednesday for the funeral of a man known to hundreds of people all over Barnsley as ‘Carpet Jack’.
So many people wanted to attend the funeral service of Jack Hellewell at Ardsley Crematorium that his family was advised to reserve twice as much time as usual.
That ‘double booking’ was necessary to allow all the mourners to be able to get in and out of the building before and after the service.
His widow Christine said: “He loved making people laugh, he loved telling jokes and more than anything he loved people in Barnsley.”
John (Jack) Hellewell owned and ran New World Carpets in Wellbeck Street for more than 40 years, only retiring when he was 70 and his health began to decline.
