Adam Hammill's 89th-minute winner secured a game against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley next Tuesday as Barnsley came from behind twice to beat Derby County in the second round of the Carabao Cup at Oakwell.
The Reds fell behind early on but Adam Jackson's first goal for the club drew them level, only for Derby to score again just before the break. Tom Bradshaw levelled on 75 minutes then substitute Hammill netted a superb long-range strike to secure a return to the ground where he scored two stunners as Barnsley won Wembley finals last year. Barnsley will now visit Premier League giants Tottenham at their temporary home in the national stadium for a third round clash.
Paul Heckingbottom made four changes from the side that drew at Preston three days earlier in the league as Harvey Barnes, George Moncur, Bradshaw and Ethan Pinnock came in for Hammill, the cup-tied Gary Gardner, Ike Ugbo and Liam Lindsay. Derby made 11 changes from their 5-0 success over Hull City on Friday.
Jackson had to produce a fine tackle after Johnny Russell went clean through in the second minute then, in the third, Barnsley's Barnes crashed an impressive 25-yard shot off the cross bar. But Russell put the visitors ahead in the sixth minute with a curling shot into the bottom left corner from the right side of the box after the home defence had been opened up.
Barnsley should have levelled in the 12th minute when visiting goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell parried Jason McCarthy's cross straight to Bradshaw but the strike blazed over the empty net from ten yards out. The equaliser eventually came when Jackson headed in Ryan Hedges' corner after 18 minutes.
Derby almost retook the lead midway through the half when Ikechi Anya appeared to let the ball go out of play but the officials allowed him to continue, skip past two defenders and square for Russell who rolled a weak shot straight to Adam Davies.
The Rams went back in front in the 39th minute when Anya crossed from the right and youngster Mason Bennett turned it in at the back post. Barnsley should have levelled before the break but Brad Potts headed a fine chance wide from well inside the box after meeting another good Hedges cross.
Bennett almost got another four minutes after the break but his deflected shot was tipped around the post by Davies who dived full-length to his right. The same player was denied again when Davies tipped his header over the bar.
But it was the hosts who levelled with their first real chance of the second half. Barnes did brilliantly to power forward on the left wing and whip in a low cross which was tapped into the gaping net by a sliding Bradshaw just a few yards out.
Hammill sent a 25-yard free-kick just wide but then got the winner when he fired into the bottom right corner from a similar distance.
