PENISTONE Grammar School is to be swelled by an additional 250 pupils in the years ahead because Barnsley Council is predicting increased demand on places.
It means that more than £2m will have to be spent extending the school, which itself was built only a few years ago under the £1bn Building Schools for the Future programme.
Penistone Grammar is Barnsley's best performing secondary school and is attended by pupils from across the borough.
The extension proposal, approved by the council's ruling cabinet on Wednesday, will increase the capacity from 1,400 to 1,650 pupils and is due to be complete by September 2019.
