The carving is similar to several which have been left in villages around Yorkshire.
Complaints were made to the police about the foot-tall statues which were left on doorsteps throughout the region. As well as bewilderment the carvings have sparked national media interest.
But the Chronicle has solved the mystery of the strange sculptures - and discovered a cliff face full of them right here in Barnsley. Some of the carvings are simplistic and childlike, but others have been expertly carved by the same artist responsible for the statue mystery.
