Adam Hammill is desperate to end a 36-match wait for a Championship goal and admits that tomorrow's derby at Sheffield Wednesday would be the perfect time to do so.
The 29-year-old winger netted earlier this season in the Carabao Cup win over Derby County but his last league goal was a late equaliser in a 2-2 home draw with Bristol City on October 29 last year, a day short of a year before tomorrow's derby. Hammill told the Chronicle: "If one goes in I usually go on a run of scoring quite a few. Whenever it comes I will be grateful and happy. There will be no better time than at Sheffield Wednesday to get that goal. But I am not overthinking things, I just play with a smile on my face."
Hammill was on the bench for the opening game of the season at Bristol City but has started every league fixture since. He is now in the top ten in the division for both crosses and tackles. But with Ryan Hedges making a strong start to the season, Harvey Barnes impressing on loan from Leicester and Lloyd Isgrove almost back from injury, Hammill knows he has to be at his best to keep his place in the side. He said: "It's good to be playing every week but I am not in my comfort zone because there are four wingers here who could play in any team."
Hammill's last trip to Sheffield Wednesday saw him sent off in a 2-0 defeat in December after the referee appeared to show the red card to home player Sam Hutchinson. He said: "People get sent off and make mistakes. A little bit of drama adds to the occasion and the fans talk about it but, for me, I never look back because there is no point"It's the perfect game for us to have at the moment because it's a big derby. It can be very hostile at Hillsborough and, if you make a mistake, the home fans all let you know about it. The atmosphere is great and the noise is electric so it's all about how you handle it. But this is a young Barnsley team which plays with no fear and we're all looking forward to it."
