STUDENTS and staff at Dearne High have raised £1,200 which will help Ugandan orphans to buy an education.
Five staff and 18 children between eight and 16 years old from Hope primary school in northern Uganda took part in workshops at the school on Friday to demonstrate the traditional music and dances of east Africa.
All the youngsters have been orphaned by AIDS and are part of Hope for Africa which is touring the country and visited Barnsley schools last week.
During the afternoon they gave a one hour performance of songs and dances, one a tribal dance, and included a song in English about their plight.
“It was very touching and I don’t think there was a dry eye in the hall,” said a school spokesman. “We were told that Dearne High had raised the most money for them.”
