CCTV cameras for Wombwell will not be installed in the near future because the police declined to put funding into a proposed wireless camera scheme.

Police have said they support the idea of CCTV for Wombwell but the moveable wireless camera system which was proposed by the Wombwell councillors would not have been good value for money.

Andy Cole, chair of the High Street Committee, said: “We’re very disappointed we’re not going to get CCTV. Why can places like Swinton and Wath have cameras and Wombwell can’t?

Insp Bates said: “A CCTV system would be an advantage in Wombwell but it must be the right system at the right time.

“What South Yorkshire Police didn’t want was a system which was not the right one. We want the right system for the people of Wombwell. When the time is right we will be working closely with the community to try to achieve it.”

The three Wombwell Councillors Margaret Morgan, Denise Wilde and Dick Wraith, said in a joint statement: “We’re very disappointed CCTV is not going ahead in the short term but grateful that Insp Bates has visited the proposed system and has given us his professional advice. We don’t want to waste money on something that’s not right for Wombwell."
