HUNDREDS turned out to mark the start of the festive period in Penistone last weekend as town mayor Joe Unsworth switched on the Christmas lights.
An ACME style plunger was used turn on the town’s illuminations as the sun went down on Saturday.
Spectators were then treated to a comedy sketch from Penistone Theatre Group and traditional carol singing from choirs accompanied by Thurlstone Brass Band.
Mr Unsworth said: “Everything went without a hitch. The crowd really enjoyed it and were kept entertained by the choir and theatre group. The only problem was that it was a sunny day and we had to wait until 5 o'clock to switch the lights on so it was dark.”
The award for the best dressed shop window was handed out to Barnsley Hospice charity shop for their Christmas display.
Even Father Christmas made an appearance riding the new sleigh paid for by the Penistone Round Table.
