THIRTY-FIVE people have been left wondering what will happen to the thousands of pounds they put towards the cemetery railings replacement following confirmation that the metalwork section of the Bondfield Centre is to close.
But the Friends of Wombwell Cemetery have said the railings will all be made ‘come what may’.
The group helped set up a scheme where people paid £300 for the materials to make a section of railing which, in return, would be fitted with a commemorative plaque.
Adults with learning disabilities at the Bondfield Occupational Skills Unit helped make the railings at cost price. But the unit is to close. Most of the users will stay at Bondfield and activities will transfer to other units at the centre but metalwork is to stop around Christmas.
Roy Sagar, of Amalfi Close, Darfield, has been waiting since February for his railings. He said: “I hope some funding can be arranged to help get it done but the railings need to all look the same. It wouldn’t be right if they were made by different people and didn’t match."
