A TEENAGER who died after being hit by a lorry was a bright, caring beautiful girl who wanted to be a midwife when she grew up, her family said.

Paige Bateman, 14, died following the incident at on Doncaster Road, Barnsley, at 3pm on Friday.

Paige was a popular student who was excelling at Barnsley Academy, where she was a pupil, and had wanted to work alongside her twin sister Nina.

Her mum Hayley Bateman and her immediate family said in a statement: “We are absolutely devastated by what has happened and words cannot describe how much Paige meant to all of her family and friends. Paige was a bright, caring and beautiful girl who loved her family so much.

“Paige has a twin, Nina, and they have a younger sister Emily and little brother Parker. Paige was a popular pupil at Barnsley Academy, and was much loved by all her school friends. Her favourite subject was history and she was excelling in all her subjects.

“Paige talked about wanting to be a midwife when she grew up and working alongside her sister Nina, and she was looking forward to the arrival of a baby cousin in September.

“Flowers are currently being placed by the sign post next to where the incident happened and we are grateful to everyone who has shown their support throughout this heartbreaking time.”

A fundraising page has been set up to help cover the costs of Paige’s funeral. So far, £3,221 has been raised.

Police were called to Doncaster Road, near to junctions with Heathfield and Vaal Street, just after 3pm on Friday.

On Friday, Barnsley District Commander Chf Supt Scott Green said: “Our investigators are working hard to establish the full circumstances of this very sad incident and our thoughts are with the girl’s family.”

Anyone who saw the collision or has dash-cam footage should call police on 101 and quote incident 550 of April 27.
