A 23-YEAR-OLD Wombwell man has been charged with the murder of his alcoholic flatmate.
Matthew Winfield, of Wentworth View, appeared before Barnsley Magistrates on Friday accused of killing Alfie Smith, 58.
Alfie was found dead by paramedics at about 6.45pm on Christmas Day. A post mortem revealed he died as a result of multiple injuries.
Another man, aged 24, and a 22-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of murder but released without charge.
Neighbours described Alfie, who had been married twice and leaves two children, as a friendly man although they admitted he had a serious drinking problem.
Fears for his safety began when he did not arrive at his mum's house for the traditional festive family gathering.
Sister-in-law Wendy went to his flat to check up on him only to find CID officers combing the scene. Mum Emily, 82, of Jardine Street, Wombwell said: “I've cried and cried and I can’t cry any more. I'm more hurt because I know someone has hurt him."
The Chronicle spoke to Alfie, who was also known as Shane, earlier this month about his neighbour Robert Lee. Lee is awaiting trial for the murder of his estranged wife Jane Lee (who was also known as Jane Gracie).
Winfield appeared before district judge Michael Rosenberg today, and was sent for trial at Sheffield Crown Court where he will appear next Friday.
