RESIDENTS in Penistone East have set up a crime and safety group after a spate of vandalism and lighter fuel abuse in one of the villages.

Earlier this month residents in Penistone East, which includes the villages of Silkstone, Silkstone Common, Hoylandswaine, Cawthorne, Crow Edge and Thurgoland, met to discuss crime and anti-social behaviour.

The move came after more than 40 cans of lighter fluid were found on Silkstone recreation ground recently and in October vandals caused thousands of pounds of damage to cars and homes in the same village.

After an assault in the area earlier this week PC Andy Thompson from Penistone’s Safer Neighbourhood Team said the groups can be vital in helping police enquiries.

It was the last area in Barnsley to set up a crime group and chairman Meryl Liddell, of Black Horse Drive, Silkstone, said seeing the groups working in other districts inspired her to get involved.
