INDOOR traders at Barnsley market are furious the council has left them out of a deal to cut rents by 50 per cent.

The open and semi-open stallholders will get the reduction until the new markets open at the end of 2009.

The authority wants to compensate them for disruption during construction of the £300m Barnsley Markets project and boost lettings.

For those inside where the uptake of stalls is said to be stable, charges remain the same.

The distinction has incensed stallholders in the indoor hall who were already angry that rents will double the day they move into the new complex.

Indoor traders were not told of the offer to other stallholders until the news was made public last week. Several say they have since tried to question market managers about the decision to no avail.
