A BOXING club aimed at getting kids fit and off the streets has been set up in Kendray.

Dozens turned up to the first training session in Cedar Crescent community centre on Monday.

Coun Jim Smith, chairman of the club, said he was delighted at the turn out. It had taken two years of hard work to finally get the club open.

"We have responded to requests from youngsters, both male and female, who said they wanted some physical activity and a boxing club was highlighted."

He said the club would also increase self-esteem and self-discipline.

"Given the opportunity our youngsters all want to do something positive and join in. I am sure they will."

Kendray's former PCSO, Walt Boydell, has helped the club and will run the coaching.

He said: "How brilliant is it to see all these young people off the streets. All I want is for them to come and enjoy themselves and keep fit and keep out of trouble.
