GROCER Fred Ward's funeral procession was led by a restored wagon which he had driven as a delivery vehicle.

The vintage 1949 Albion Chieftain carried his coffin to Ardsley crematorium for the service on Friday June 23.

It has been restored and carries the FW insignia on the front and livery on the doors states 'Fred Ward, fruit mechant, Barnsley'.

Fred's newphew Colin said the lorry was bought in 1949 by his father Jack and brother Tom who owned a grocery business in Wath. When they retired Fred took over the firm and ran the vehicle for another ten years until the mid-1970s - until it bceame too slow.

The family sold the lorry and heard nothing about it until about three years ago.

Colin said: "Somebody rang Fred because it still had his name on the side and the new owner wanted to restore it. They went on to finish it and we all went to see it on a couple of occasions.

When I rang them to say Fred had died they couldn't believe it because they had just finished and wanted us to go and see the lorry again."

Fred died a fortnight ago, aged 82.
