A NEW altar has been fitted at a church in Grimethorpe using the 14th century stone plinth of the Boundary of the Cross.

The Lady Stone has provided the base for the altar in St Luke's Church and was installed on Tuesday. Father Peter Needham said: "I'm thrilled to bits, it is a work of art."

The Boundary of the Cross was originally placed in Lady Wood but the stone was found in a a farmer's field three years ago.

A piece of St Augustine's bone will be placed in the altar in the Lady Chapel and will be consecrated by the Bishop of Pontefract, Tony Robinson. in a service at a later date.
