A POST box used by hundreds of residents is being closed by Royal Mail after more than 50 years because of health and safety fears.

The box on Barnsley Road, Penistone, will close on March 5 leaving many elderly people unable to post their letters with the nearest box almost half a mile away in the town centre.

Collections were recently reduced from two per day to one but now Royal Mail is scrapping them altogether because staff fear being knocked down.

Barbara Turner, a retired teacher, of Barnsley Road, Penistone, has used the post box for more than 40 years.

She said: "Everyone is furious about it, it is such a valuable amenity we will be losing. We have two granddaughters who live in London and we write to them every week.

"It is used by a lot of people my age who don't have the ability to walk up the steep hill to Penistone or have any transport."
