PREMATURE babies in Barnsley will be kept extra warm in hospital after an 88-year-old woman knitted more than a dozen outfits for the neo-natal unit. Iris Dalton of Weavers Court, Penistone, has made 18 coats, hats and boots for the newborns that she plans to donate to the hospital this week. Iris, a great grandmother, got the idea after seeing a notice asking people to knit for babies in Sheffield hospitals. She said: "I have always enjoyed knitting but usually just for family. I hadn't knitted for a few years since my great granddaughter was born but I thought it was a good idea and if Sheffield hospitals wanted baby clothes then Barnsley would. "I have tried to make them all different, with lots of different colours. They are so tiny they look like dolls clothes but the patterns are pretty." Iris started knitting the minature outfits just after Christmas and makes a set in a couple of days. She has also knitted clothes that will be sent to needy children in other parts of the world through Operation Christmas Child. When she isn't knitting Iris enjoys a game of bingo and reading. And she is definitely not ready to hang up her needles just yet. She said: "I will carry on as long as I can. It keeps me busy and hopefully they will be pleased with them."
