A MONK BRETTON sailor was the top recruit in the latest class of Royal navy trainees to complete their training.

Kim Thornton, 25, a trainee engineering technician, was presented with the Owen Cup at the passing out parade as the recruit who achieved the best overall marks during training.

The former Priory pupil used to be an export administrator. She joined up in December and with her first phase of training complete she will be transferred to HMS Sultan in Hampshire for her professional training.

Once fully trained she will be part of the team that looks after everything from the fuel, power and propulsion systems that keep the ship going, to the water purification and air-conditioning equipment critical to the wellbeing of the crew.
