BARNSLEY Interchange has beaten competition from 20 projects to claim a civil engineering honour.

The £24m Remaking Barnsley scheme was announced the winner of the 2008 Institution of Civil Engineers Yorkshire and Humber Award at a gala dinner in Harrogate on Friday.

The judging panel was led by Institute of Civil Engineers and Yorkshire Forward chairman Les Goddard. He said: “Located at the heart of Barnsley, this project certainly has a wow factor. Its contemporary appearance is inspiring and refreshing.

"The interior of the interchange is equally impressive with a spacious, friendly and open environment. "This new gateway to Barnsley will provide a focal point for continued regeneration and is a project of which the profession should be proud.”
